Wake Owl is a folk outfit from Vancouver, continuing the list of incredible folk acts from The Great White North. Their debut EP, Wild Country, available as a pay-what-you-want download, is a collection of five extremely listenable songs ranging from foot stompers to slow burners. Wild Country also displays an impressive mix of instrumentation, from the usual folk standards, to electronic keys that give songs like “Seaside” a pop vibe. Combine that with the varied arrangements and the record is one entertaining listen, keeping your attention from song to song. Wild Country is just the beginning for Wake Owl, and it’s one hell of a beginning. I can’t wait to see what is to come from these Vancouver folkies.
